The broken windmills

N. Lygeros

Translated from the Greek by Angeliki Papadopoulou

The broken windmills were waiting for me
for centuries,
silent.

Their smashed wings were
the unique symbols
or resistance.

And when my gaze faced them
for second time
I died.

Then the wind blew again
upon the bleakness
of humans.
