55611 - Turkish Misinformation in regards to Search and Rescue

Translated from the Greek by Athina Kehagias

Regarding the issue of the EEZ, Turkey, no matter how hard she tries, she cannot come out on top. The absurd memorandum with the Libyan government did not go too well for her, because it was invalidated and it provoked reactions against Turkey. As a result the government decided to involve the issue of Search and Rescue in order to give the impression to non-experts that it continues to talk about the EEZ issue and more specifically about the blue homeland. The problem is that in this field as well, Turkey cannot implement international agreements. Consequently, she forgot that in the case of the Aegean, the Search and Rescue zone of Greece coincides with the eastern part of the Athens FIR. As if that was not enough, Turkey has placed our islands within its zone, a factor which makes no sense since our sovereignty functions there. Initially, she assumed that our islands have no EEZs, nor a continental shelf, and now she is encroaching upon their sovereignty. This is no longer merely provocative, but simply ridiculous, because now everyone can realize that Turkey’s positions are clearly out of context. Consequently, Turkey itself with these new statements ridicules its own argument even in front of its own allies. With this new approach, even neutral countries can see that foreign islands cannot be in Turkey’s Search and Rescue Zone. Now everyone is aware about the Turkish lack of knowledge upon the mere basics.
