Due to the propinquity between Cyprus and Crete at a geological level, the information we obtain from the drilling taking place by the drilling rig Saipem 12000 at the Calypso reserve is extremely optimistic. The first data give good indications of natural gas existence in marine block 6 which is investigated by the Eni – Total consortium. This in actual fact means that Calypso reserve will also contribute towards the East Med gas pipeline. The first estimates indicate that the Calypso reserve constitutes the 40% of the Zohr reserve, which by the way is hypergigantic. This in fact means that if Calypso obtains the same plenitude as Zohr, then this discovery is in the order of 9 trillion cubic feet, a quantity twice as much as that of the Aphrodite reserve. In other words, it represents Greece’s energean needs for about 50 years. There is also the possibility that the Calypso reserve is not only one of the three structures we have within the region, but a cohesive reserve within a much larger structure, as it enters through marine blocks 6, 7 and 10. Consequently, in this case the reserve could exceed even the 14 trillion cubic feet. The official announcements will be made by the competent Cypriot authority, and only then we’ll know the data regarding the Calypso reserve more accurately. In actual fact, it entails not only the elements of a discovery but also of an apocalypse, as it contains even more than we’ve expected, since the three structures may in fact be a single larger one.
