Australia is known in the energy sector and especially in that of the hydrocarbons and for this reason is amongst the leading countries in these activities.
Australia knows locally the Greek element in 600,000 different ways and this has contributed substantially to its relations with Greece.
Australia makes intense use of the Greek merchant fleet, since with it,it transports half of its products in the sector of imports and exports.
Also, an Australian oil company is a candidate for the plots of the Cypriot EEZ.
So in this manner, the opening of Greece through its 20 marine plots in the Ionian Sea and south of Crete, that are located within the Greek EEZ, was expected to also interest Australia.
There is, of course, a scientific reason also, since Northern Australia and the Eastern Mediterranean have common ground on a geological level due to the convergence of the tectonic plates. Consequently the hydrocarbon experts also know about the theoretical value of reserves in the Mediterranean region. All these data contributes to actively support the launch of the tender for the licensing of the Greek marine plots.
We see threfore that the Greeks of Australia can be an enhanced link between the two countries, since it is a non-zero-sum game, as we say in the game theory, within which, strategic behaviours could developed, that lead to a strategic blend beneficial to both sides.
The new chess board, which is formed with the Greek EEZ and the EEZ of Cyprus, allows Australia to play an important role if all these countries realize their common interests in this field.
Also the Greeks of Australia who belong to its productive dynamics, could inform both countries for each others of the competencies. An alliance framework is created which could be converted into a common field of action, where the sea, namely the endless blue, the natural gas,namely the LNG and the merchant fleet, are powerful pieces ready for action. So we can prepare a common future between Greece and Australia.
