20873 - From the new Suez Canal to the new trilateral re: the EEZ

Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias

The Suez Canal has always been a geostrategic point from 1869, and now with the new opening, it acquires new dual direction.
In this sense it’s a great investment for Egypt.
And one way to enhance this focal point, is to create alliances directly at the sea area.
Egypt has done its EEZ demarcations with Cyprus since 2003 and it supported this agreement with the 2012 extension.
Thereon, with the two trilaterals with both Greece and Cyprus, it began talking over what should be done in regards to the issue of the EEZ for the three countries.
And the reason is simple.
Greece is a link to Egypt regarding the European Union, and especially with Italy.
It is the analog of Cyprus for Israel.
Therefore, Greece and Cyprus are already playing an energean role, even though the Greeks have not realized it yet.
This triple partnership is of strategic importance for all three countries.
Because we are talking about more intense involvement at Suez, via the merchant fleet, for collaboration with the port of Piraeus, but certainly the most important of all, is the management of the three EEZ around the triple point of contact between Greece-Cyprus-Egypt.
Therefore, we see that we move slowly on what should be done for geo-economic and not only economic reasons.
So, strategy, together with the energy, already play an important role.
