21091 - The Zohr reserve and the Cypriot strategy

Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias

All those who have tried for so long to reduce the total value of the Cypriot marine plots, in order to give exclusive priority to the Aphrodite reserve, went through the process of encouraging the creation of a pipeline connecting the reserve with Egypt, instead of supporting a liquefaction plant in Cyprus.
And in order to justify this approach, which is very conservative in an investment level, they tried to explain to us, that Egypt is in need of the Cypriot natural gas.
They certainly didn’t take into account the researches made by the Italian company ENI in Egypt’s marine plots, even though this company is well known, due to its presence on marine plots 2, 3 and 9 of the Cypriot EEZ.
But the discovery of the Zohr reserve, which happens to be hyper gigantic one, comes to totally invalidate this argument.
And it was definitely expected as per ENI ‘s activity in Egypt for some decades.
Additionally, the Zohr reserve, comes to prove that the Aphrodite reserve is not the only one in the region.
Of course there are also the reserves Leviathan and Tamar.
It’s only that now it is known to all.
And some cunning ones can no longer insist, that we should solely bet on Aphrodite, in order that we should do nothing elsewhere.
On the contrary, with this discovery which will ensure self-sufficiency for Egypt, the liquefaction plant at Vasiliko must become our priority.
Because it follows these new energean mental schemes, but additionally enhances the geopolitical value of Cyprus and will actually constitute a platform for virtually all subsequent reserves of the Cypriot EEZ.
