21160 - From the reserves to the EEZ
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias
Now, as much as some want to degrade the EEZ issue, they have an objective problem with the location of the reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean: Tamar (2009), Leviathan (2010), Aphrodite (2011) and this year the two reserves in the Egyptian EEZ and especially Zohr (2015) which is hyper giant.
Because of these actual facts, even the universities are activated in Cyprus (Bachelor, Master, Phd) and in Greece as well, and additionally now there is a specific site for the study in the field of energy and hydrocarbons on the internet. In other words, in the sector of science there is no longer any excuse.
This is regarding the prospects for example, with the target-reserves Pyrrhus and Achilles in marine plot 2 in the Ionian Sea, and the target-reserve Minos in marine plot 14 South of Crete. We know that there are there objectively, and that everything depends on us, in regards to whether we will utilize them, without of course forgetting that all this is always happening within the context of the EEZ.
Because the strategic reserves are located far from the coast and of course off the 6 NM in each case.
Consequently the issue of the Greek EEZ both regarding the establishment and the demarcations, becomes not only more and more relevant but also necessary.
Our marine plots must obtain a clear legal context and this occurs only with the Law of the Sea and the concept of the EEZ.
Therefore, even if the politicians delay matters, it is the reality of the reserves which are pushing them, whether they want to or not, towards the Greek EEZ, because now we also have alliances, so there is no justification for any further delays.
