21320 - Eastern Mediterranean and Natural Gas

Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias
The discovery of the Zohr reserve, creates an allied context, which is enhancing on a practical basis, both Cyprus and Greece, due to the tripartite developments.
We shouldn’t of course be examining things at a topical level, as what’s important is the overall progress of the Eastern Mediterranean strategy towards the European Union.
In other words we should not look at amounts of natural gas which exists within each of their EEZ, but rather, the overall picture, due to the necessary reserves required by the East Med pipeline, in order for it to be viable in its purveyance at a European level.
Therefore, when some focus solely on the sale of natural gas by Cyprus to Egypt, it’s obvious that they don’t understand what the big picture for the region actually is.
Because the discovery of large reserves creates a growing interest amongs the companies as investors in the region.
This means that we must think collectively and holistically and not locally.
The Eastern Mediterranean is a common context, and based on it, we should design a strategic mix, with which we will have national strategies which converge toward the same goal.
The East-Med pipeline is an implementation of that type, and such is the EuroAsia Interconnector, which concerns, Greece, Cyprus and Israel.
Therefore, each new reserve is an enhancement of the whole approach.
Consequently, we must realize that it’s a perspective which has nothing to do with delusions and dreams, but on the contrary, with strategic visions, which alter the reality, because they contribute to its overall development.
In that manner, we escape from the entrapment caused by solution negotiations which lead to nowhere, because we know that our priority is the utilization and the promotion of the sea.
