28262 - The catastrophe of the church

N. Lygeros
Translated from Greek by Athina Kehagias

The barbarism of the terrorist group Daesh continues, this time with the catastrophe of an Assyrian church. Of course, because everyone within the society is concerned only with their own issues, we have only the Just thinking about the innocent. The others, as long as it’s not their own temple, or their own church, they’ll not say anything at all, even if they can objectively see that it constitutes a barbarity, a crime against Humanity in the context of a genocide. The catastrophe of a church is not simply the expression of an ideology, or of a certain religion which promotes hatred, but it’s the violation of the innocent, because it’s not a military target. It’s chosen aiming for a faith to perish in an atrocious manner. The targeting of a church, obtains also a symbolic character, so as to not leave any context of hope standing upright for the people who suffer. The barbarians want to indicate that there is no return to the past and that all traces have been erased. Consequently, we ought to let go of our classic indifference, and to condemn this act just like all the others constituting crimes. We shouldn’t wait until they destroy one of our own churches,in order for us to react and resist. The Assyrians have suffered a genocide a hundred years ago, and they didn’t need to live through these new crimes now. It is our duty to protect them, not only because they are Christians, but because they are people of Humanity.
