32682 - Greek EEZ and marine blocks
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias
The necessity of the declaration of the Greek EEZ is becoming more and more obvious, due to the claims upon its marine blocks.
We already had nominations re: marine blocks 1, 2 and 10 of the large licensing round, but now the consortium of Hellenic Petroleum, Total and Exxon Mobil has applied for two marine blocks South of Crete.
This means that we ought to establish our sovereign right, just as Cyprus did in 2004.
Because so far, all the researches carried out within the Greek EEZ are done so, without a permit from Greece, and consequently our homeland has no income at all from them.
In actual fact,, at some point of time, after the Norwegian PGS company’s researches, in the Ionian and South of Crete, and just prior to the initiation of the licensing round re: the 20 marine blocks, we actually bought and incorporated data from these surveys.
If we want to create marine blocks and for there to be nominations from major oil and gas companies, while they will be situated at the point of contact of other EEZs such as that of Libya, the legal context should be crystal clear.
