Translated from Greek by Athina Kehagias
The Askitiki was published in 1927, and Nikos Kazantzakis passed away in 1957.
These two dates don’t merely constitute an opportunity for an anniversary event to take place at Heraklion, but are symbols for Hellenism and Humanity since Kazantzakis’ works has touched upon numerous countries due to Its range.
It is therefore important to pay tribute to this man, who gave prominence to Crete, Greece and Hellenism as a whole.
The selection of the site of the tomb by Nikos Kazantzakis is the starting point of the thought of this tribute. So, in collaboration with several sectors of Heraklion, and of the entire Crete as well, an event is organized, of which the trailhead is the Castle of the Sea (Rocca a Mare), and all participants with black shirts will follow a course toward the tomb of the writer.
At that point, there will be recitations by various voices of the arts field, from excerpts of the Askitiki, up until the change of light and the beginning of night, when everyone will light his candle in order for Heraklion to honour Nikos Kazantzakis.
Thereon, a musical event will close the event by crossing the bridge and ending up at the cultural center.
In this manner, which will rely upon the participation of the people, Heraclion and the entire Crete will show that they don’t forget their own person.
The course will follow Askitiki’ own mental schemes, in a manner that the work is also the spirit of the entire effort, in order that at the end, the exceedance of the being to become obvious.
