32909 - Total’ licenses in Cyprus

Translated from the Greek by Athina Kehagias

Cyprus’ effectiveness in the energean sector is spectacular, even for the most irrelevant re: the sector. We concretely observe that Cyprus, which has already organized three licensing rounds, is functioning dynamically into making catalytic moves. And while back in Greece we are still discussing matters regarding the first licensing round, because an extension has been given once again for the application evaluations, Cyprus has already passed through to the drilling license. Consequently we are already discussing the arrival of the drilling rig and the drilling-mud management practices. The difference makes the difference. Because the candidacies in Cyprus are not competitive, in the sense that there were many nominations for the same marine blocks, due to its geopolitic approach, whereas in Greece, due to a backward ideology, there were only three nominations, and re: only three marine blocks, whereas the large licensing round concerned twenty marine blocks. That is therefore characteristic of the various approaches in regards to the issue, and not the large oil companies interest towards it, and the Exxon Mobil and Total consortium merging in a joint venture with Hellenic Petroleum, is indicative that they have an objective interest in the region South of Crete, as they submitted a formal application. Consequently, all those who are following up the data, and go on to compare the two countries, realize that, one is dynamic due to strategy, and the other is behind schedule due to a lack of strategy.
