34637 - Above the Hieron

N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athina Kehagias

When we examine a church Hieron and internally, we perceive, according to our knowledge, that it follows canons and types.
Of course, those remain completely unknown to the faithful who doesn’t pay attention to details, whereas they constitute evidence of the history of the church itself as well as our faith.
Upon entering the church, we bow down in worship in front of the hagiographies, regadless of the fact that we don’t understand the conception of their existence.
Because it’s the hagiographies that raises the church and that is the reason the iconoclasts wanted to attack them, and again it was for that reason that when we become aware that enemies are approaching the church for looting, our own remove the Icons in order to protect them from barbarism.
And we can imagine what that means when the entire church is Iconographised.
We also see Christ the Pantocrator upon the central dome.
We assume that this choice is self-evident and natural, whereas it’s an example of profoundness since we place high above this element that constitutes the foundation of our faith.
As it obtains a range, because it has depth.
The same applies to the Hieron, since we place Panaghia the Platytera right above it.
In that manner the faithful recognizes the fundamental element that the future encapsulates within it, from the past.
They can observe the act of protection which became an act of support during the Crucifixion.
Therefore, above the absolute sacrifice of Christ for all people, we place the Icon of Panaghia.
Because even at the most difficult situations of all, She was always with Him.
His passions were also Her own.
In other words, She’s in the Hieron, and in actual fact right above Him, all because of necessity and adoration.
If we could all see this symbolism which is fundamental to our faith, then we would’ve given more importance to what’s proper, and not to what we ought to.
Because faith follows canons due to respect of continuity and not in order to violate human rights.
The love of Humanity doesn’t exclude anybody from anywhere because it’s present everywhere.
