35313 - There is no need to be afraid of Turkey
N. Lygeros
USA will continue their geopolitics, no matter what Turkey wants. This is not only a problem of principle but a strategic dogma. Even if Turkey belongs to NATO, this state has its own view which is quite different from other State Members. Its position and opinion against USA, especially this period is due to the fact that they support the idea of Kurdistan. In fact at a practical level, USA supports the Kurds but Turkey sees clearly that it’s not only a tactical choice in the struggle against Daesh. American opinion is positive and not neutral about the creation of Kurdistan. There are some strategic interests as always but the idea is rather simple: why so many millions of Kurds can’t have a homeland? Why is Turkey against them? Kurds are a reality, not a utopia. Turkey tries desperately to persuade itself that it’s a regional power and that it can play a big role in the Middle East but history and reality say no. Turkey uses the fact that its position and its place in the region are important. But geography it is insufficient for politics and geopolitics. The president of Turkey with his sultan’s behavior, wants to be seen as a tough guy. But of course, he can’t impress USA and he’s not able to solve the problem of Kurdistan. He has to accept it but it’s impossible for him. So he tries again and again to convince his people with wrong movements about the visas. This tactic has no prospective. He tries also to have a good contact with Iran in vain. Iran is too different from Turkey. And opportunism can’t be a long term strategy. The use of Kurds as a tool to make a good deal with Iran is not really smart and even efficient. The fact that Iran is an enemy of USA is not relevant for Turkey. Only Turkey has a big problem with Kurds. Not only because Kurds are everywhere in this country but also because it is their homeland. The spoliation of their Rights can’t continue so easily now and Turkey has to change. And in any case at the end of the process, Turkey will have to change its frontiers. For the moment, the boundaries aren’t so clear but slowly the reality of the situation changes the face on this region. And USA is an actor in this change management.
