460 - The humanity of death and the bitterness of oblivion
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias
Within us live the souls of all our ancestors. This constitutes one of the most important lessons of death. That does not only arise from the creative of its nature, but due to the humane one.
Because within death lays a great humanity and not only when it redeems the body from the sufferings of life. Its humanity derives from its handling by the traditional social element.
The circle of the dead brings him to life, with the mnemosyne and direct reference to him.
The deceased is not an anonymous witness of a story that evolves independently of him, but is the protagonist and the creator of it. Without his death there would be no history and society would not be necessary. Friends live with the death of the deceased because in their memory he remains a friend. And all this contributes to the human the memory of his descendants.
The memory, like the flame, is changing bodies but it remains the same and it likewise enriches the memory of the descendant. Every human lives within the world of his ancestors.
Not only you do you exist without the others, but you do not exist also without your ancestors.
The foundational elements of our thinking, are the memories and the emotions of our ancestors.
We are alive because they have lived and they remain alive because we will live.
All memories become one, in order for the human to exist.
The feeling of uniqueness derives from the inclusiveness of memory.
So, on nights that some are accompanying the dead, there are reference points re a future life in the context of collective memory.
The horizon of the human widens, because he understands and realizes the influence of humanity through a society which is disarmed by the extreme state of life.
The extreme, places society in such intensity, that it forces it to liberate the humanity that exists within it.
Close friends become pillars of support, and open their heart, in order to offer what they have, or may have not said before. Our existence becomes life, and the relationship humane. All systems collapse when their base is not substantial. All that remains is humanity.
Our nation says, that there is no wedding without tears and no funeral without laughter. In other words, they all are tragicomical. Their borders are conventional and social. Human life is an amalgam, and there is no way to separate the initial substances. The catalytic element of humanity has formed them permanently.
The people do not confuse them, they were just split by society’s divorce, which is trying to control the situation by dividing the ingredients. And the collective memory is a consolation for the individual one. The personal contact is lost within an ocean of sorrow and joy. The grievance is becoming a smile and the smile sheds tears.
All the life of death, penetrates the collective memory and thereon fights only oblivion.
And it’s during those moments that you realize, that there is something that is even more bitter than death, that is oblivion. Because in order to face death there is memory, whereas, within oblivion there is nothing anymore.
Death may be the end of life, but oblivion is the end of existence.
If everyone was to forget you, it would’ve been as if you never existed.
That’s why the people wish, for memory to long live, at the time of death. The same applies to all people. Even if they were hit by death, what’s more important is not to be hit by oblivion, because in order to exist, you must not forget.
