75663 - Truman Doctrine

Ν. Lygeros

We have to protect and help peoples
to maintain their free institutions
and their national integrity
against aggressive military movements that seek
to impose upon them
totalitarian regimes.
And the reason is simple.
Doing this, totalitarian regimes
undermine the foundations
of international peace
and at the same time
the security of the USA.
This speech was done in 1947
to a joint session of the Congress.
The Congressmen responded
to the message of the President
by promptly appropriating $ 400 millions
to support Greece and Turkey.
This was the starting point
which led the two countries
to join the NATO the same year
in 1952
after the beginning of the Korean War in 1950.
