82634 - The referendum of human dignity
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek Athina Kehagias
Many are trying to convince us that there was not a big enough debate in regards to the referendum in Australia but in vain. Firstly there is a big enough time until it takes place in a few months. Secondly, the discussions have already taken place for years on, even between the major political parties. Thirdly, recognition is not the issue here, since it is mutually accepted as such. Fourthly, there is no connection whatsoever with international or military issues. Consequently we understand that the dispute is purely of partisanly derivation. The one political party wants to come across as the only one that thought of making the decision. The other political party knows it was the first to think of it but now that the proposal to amend the Australian Constitution has been formally made by the other, it doesn’t want to support it directly. However the substance is different and fundamental for the history of Australia. The referendum has a human dimension, but of course even a panhuman one. Therefore we ought to concentrate upon this point and of course not be influenced by the Mass Media which also try to highlight a partisanly dimension in order to take advantage of the issue for their own benefit. The referendum is not an atonement for all that has occurred in the past, but regarding human dignity for all that will take place in the future for all of Australia.
