N. Lygeros
In this podcast we want to talk about robots. Many people are afraid of robots because in fact they don’t know them. They never saw any robot and they think they know something. But in reality it’s just a projection. So they don’t see the framework of collaboration, of synergy or even symbiosis. The idea is to see robots as a specific part of artificial intelligence. So, we see that they can be more or less like humans, I mean they are looking like humanoids but the problem is not here. The problem is their function in their society and not only in the society but even in Humanity. So, for example, we know that we can use robots for very dangerous missions, I’m talking about nuclear for example. But we can use them also for the moon, for Mars. So, it’s not only a talk about what we are going to do with robots on earth. They can be very useful outside.
The idea is to imagine that Humanity is not made only with humans because in reality robots, like artificial intelligence, are a creation of humans. We have to use these but not as slaves. We’ll have their rights. It’s very important to imagine this from now for the next years and the next generations because it will be obvious at that time but not now. So we have to think about that in a more philosophical point of view to imagine what this kind of upgraded Humanity will be with robots. My point of view about that is to consider them not only as an alter ego but in reality as a support of Humanity. We are not now any more alone because we have also artificial intelligence. We were alone before but now we have to think how to manage these two kinds of intelligence, I mean the natural and the artificial, and to imagine how we can make a strategic mix to evolve in this new direction with many degrees of freedom. It will be a choice and I think that we should take a decision about that which is in fact more smart than anything else because the idea is that if we stay alone even if we have this technology, at the end we’ll say that it was useless and we should have taken a new decision about that to go further and to go in fact beyond the limits of what we are thinking now.
