85359 - The ancestor of the violin
N. Lygeros
I was listening to the part of the violin
and this conducted me
to the viol
and its ancestor
the European rebec
which has with the Byzantine lyre
the sebalo as common ancestor
as the Pontian lyre.
The latter is usually tuned to perfect fourths
i.e. B, E and A
and not fifths like violin
i.e. G, D, A, E.
In reality the Pontian lyre uses
the same direction of tuning
with the Double bass
i.e. E1, A1, D2 and G2
which are also the first four strings
of a standard guitar.
Even with only those points
it’s possible to see the common lineage
and of course the legacy
in the History of Humanity.
They belong to the chordophones
of the Hornbostel–Sachs classification.
