This podcast is dedicated to the notion of yose in the Go game. Why we are interested with that. In fact it’s a nice difference with chess. Because in chess when we are at the level of the endgame everything is almost clear. We know that we need a tactical mind and for the grandmasters it’s their specialty in fact to solve some problems at this level. The problem with yose is that we have at that moment in the Go game many stones on the goban and the problem is that even for the calculation of the difference it’s rather difficult because many stones, many territories. So we use this notion and this term to qualify this complex situation. But in fact at the beginning it’s only the fightening play, I mean for the etymology. So the problem is the following. How to count, how to see the difference and how to consolidate your position and of course to destroy a little bit the position of the opponent. This double task is rather complicated. It’s not exactly the end of the game but it’s in the endgame and so we have to see the big picture. That’s why it’s a very nice problem also for combinatorial  game theory  because we have much information, everything is on the board but it’s difficult to compute everything. So we have also the need of intuition at that moment. So we have a practical way, we have a practice and we have intuition and the problem is that yose needs a strategic view for many tactical problems. So you have to solve them and you have to play with your opponent at the same time. So it’s rather difficult to make the good choices and we have to use the right timing to do it because after that it is of course too late. But the idea and why it’s fundamental as a difference with the chess is that we have many stones for few pieces, it’s a combination which is complex and we have to solve it in a rather quick way. So all this data allows the creation of a complex problem and the solution is not easy that’s why we have a specialist for yose.
