9503 - EEZ and absurditιes

Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias

The concept of the Exclusive Economic Zone exists ever since 1982 and the context of its establishment is crystal clear.
For years on now, we are all fighting, so that the EEZ issue becomes well known, and so that the Greek nation could see that this is a strategic move which offers an economic solution.
And even this year, in 2012, the year of introducing the Greek EEZ, we have ignorant ones who are not afraid of the ridiculous.
They are under the impression that the establishment of the EEZ does not occur unilaterally.
With these statements they are indicating that they have no idea as far as the Law of the Sea is concerned, and which was signed by Greece.
Additionally, they assume that to be a hypernationalistic approach, whereas this is all about a normal procedure.
And as if that’s not enough, they are using the Cypriot example in order to frighten the people in Greece.
Whereas the reality is simple and we know it close up! Tassos Papadopoulos introduced the Cypriot EEZ in 2004 unilaterally of course, since that’s provided by the Law of the Sea.
We remind everyone that, the demarcation of the exclusive economic zone between Cyprus and Egypt had occurred back in 2003, when Cyprus had not yet joined the European Union.
It would therefore be wise, that the politicians who want to play a national role, would read the international treaties and conventions, so that they would not be ridiculed with their every statement.
The partisanly verbalism may be good for the elections, but with the EEZ which is an above political party range issue,we must be quite cautious, otherwise the irrelevance is obvious immediately and there is no cover up available.
So we are saying it once again, with the same words.
The establishment of the EEZ is always unilateral.
This is what applies and nothing else.
It’s not related to political inclinations, it’s simply the Law of the Sea.
All the preeminent politicians are aware of it by now, and it’s fine time for the rest to do the same, so that we would not be delayed with absurditιes, because 2012 will be the year of the introduction of the Greek EEZ.
