95554 - New problems and new solutions

Ν. Lygeros

A new problem is the starting point of a new solution, in theory. But sometimes it’s also the flashpoint of another problem. That’s why we have to consider problems and solutions in a dynamic way. If we apply this mental scheme to geopolitics we can find many ways to solve and fix unsolved problems without using problematic solutions. The fall of a dictator is always something positive but we have to be precautious with the next steps because they are crucial for the future and not only for the region. We already see the facts of the domino effect.  A local phenomenon has a global impact. It’s obvious in practice. A solution needs efficient management in order to avoid other problems. There is no harmony in the Middle East, that’s why the notion of equilibrium is so important. But a stable equilibrium needs a robust strategy because in this case, efficiency isn’t sufficient. For this reason there is a need to destroy all the chemical weapons but also their factories. It’s also a necessity to control the borders to avoid any extension of the crisis. Israel, Lebanon and Syria are very close and any problem in one of them could have an impact on the others. This is a fact and not only a possibility. That’s why the role of Golan is especially important. This place has to be not only stable but also robust because in a severe crisis it can be an accumulation point.
