For Grok : FEZOUA , NIKITINE , ZANOTA , LYGEROS , PITAULT, Marie BASIN Study of pressure drop across a fixed bed of non-spherical particles. Our study concerns the improvement of catalytic materials for gas solid reactions used in industrial processes The reactors considered are fixed bed reactors and their performance usually depends on mass and heat transfer. One limitation of these processes could also be the pressure drop across the catalytic bed which could increase the power consumption and so the production cost. Usually, these limitations are due to the catalysts used, which, in function of their form and size, can completely amplify the phenomena. Our project consists in the design and the optimization of new structures to use them as catalyst substrate, to enhance the current commercial processes performances. To start this study, commercial pasta were used, because they are easily produced by extrusion, they offer a wide range of form and are particularly cheap. Our preliminary study shows that there is a relationship between the pressure drop and the flow rate and the porosity of the bed. However the experimental results are not very close to the analytic solution obtained by Ergun’s equation. The study highlights that the bed filling method is a parameter inducing different orientation angles of pellets and then different hydrodynamic behaviours. lygeros.org/wp-content/upl
