54875 - The elderly disabled and the young man
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athina Kehagias
An elderly disabled man crossed the road in his wheelchair and tried to climb up the pavement, without being however able to overcome the obstacle.
At that moment a young man was coming, walking upon the pedestrian path.
He was listening to music on his headphones. He did not pay any attention to the environment around him.
Suddenly, he saw the elderly man.
He interrupted his train of thought.
But he wondered how to offer his aid to the disabled man, without him becoming afraid, as he had not seen him come so close to him.
The elderly man continued trying in vain, due to the steep gradient.
Then the young man went right behind him, and pushed him while he was stll trying.
He said nothing, and as a result the old man did not realize that he had helped him.
He did not expect a thanks, and he overtook the wheelchair.
They both smiled as they had succeeded.
The one because he managed to do it alone without asking for help, and the other because he managed to help him without actual interference.
That is why the stranger smiled at both of them successively while he met up with them, as he walked in the opposite direction.
And they both had felt that some power had rewarded them.
This power was humanism!
