39278 - If Skopje was a nation
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athina Kehagias
If Skopje was a nation, then we would’ve been talking about a national struggle. But it’s only the capital city of an ideological State. In actual fact, FYROM is a small Yugoslav Union, smaller than the larger one, which was a small Soviet Union.
The Soviet Union was dismantled, the Yugoslav Union was dismantled, the rest of it was dismantled, and Serbia was separated from Montenegro and has problems with Kosovo.
This is the revenge taken by the nations which were encroached upon by authoritarian regimes for decades on.
Now it’s FYROM’s turn, which is constituted by Skopians, Albanians, Serbs, Bulgarians, Turks and Greeks.
The internal friction is getting greater with time, because everyone comprehends that this is an admixture which could never become a melting pot because these ethnicities are durable.
The postmodern Stalinist attempt to solve a problem in an ideological manner, can not have a future for the very simple reason that it doesn’t respect the nations, and it tries to take advantage of the Skopians, in order to wound the Greek nation.
However Hellenism is durable and can withstand the ideological attacks, because it always has been free in its spirit.
