21359 - Negotiations and Statements

Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias

While they are presenting us the negotiations regarding the solving of the Cypriot issue as smooth, statements from the other side come to contradict this approach.
The reference in regards to a natural gas pipeline passing through Turkey, not only isn’t rational, but it is indicative of the ignorance about the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The European Union is the largest consumer of natural gas, but not throughout all its regions.
The so-called pipeline, even if it were to pass through Turkey, it would have gone through Greece and Bulgaria, or even Romania at some stage, but in any case far from Italy who constitutes the largest consumer.
Therefore, these statements are not related to the geopolitical and technical data of the region, but on the contrary, they demonstrate once again that the occupational regime belongs to Turkey, a factor which is obvious from the beginning, even if some want to forget it artfully.
The intetemporal horizontal strategy does not relate to Turkey by any terms.
Lebanon, Israel and Egypt, prefer Cyprus and Greece as passages, since their reserves could also enhance their own, through the same pipreline.
Nevertheless, what we see is, that the natural gas has become the essence of the problem, and is no longer merely a detail in regards to the Cypriot issue.
So we must understand that the Cypriot EEZ and its natural gas, should be utilized prior to any real effort taking place in order to solve the Cypriot issue, so that we can have an allied context on our side, deriving from a strategic mix of national interests of the States in the region.
