22637 - The unacceptable Treaty of Ankara

N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias

With the pretext of friendship, moves were made which placed at risk issues of national importance.
And for this reason we must be careful when similar discussions are taking place regarding both Greece and Cyprus.
The Treaty of Ankara constituted a wound for the Asia Minor’s refugees, while it gave the impression that things were just symmetrical.
These diplomatic mistakes didn’t occur opportunistically, but they were the continuation of a mistaken strategy which opted for an one sided de-escalation, which was all in favour of Turkey.
It actually even endangered the Dodecanese, regarding which, there was no reference concerning any claims, again under the pretext of good relations with Italy, while we can see what occurred only a few years later.
There is also the issue of Cyprus’s Union, which was also delayed as it was considered that this was not the right time, by the Greek leadership.
Finally it’s obvious, that in order to make the so-called friendship possible, the refugees were sacrificed, and so did the Dodecanese and Cyprus.
But then it was also the year of the proposal of the Nobel Peace Prize for Mustafa Kemal, by the Greek side, consequently, we can in actual fact observe the impact of this irrational mood.
We also see the limits of a political innocence which failed to do absolutely anything with these actions, nor to get even an insignificant something from Turkey in return.
In actual fact this friendship was unilateral and it constituted an expression of the guilty of a policy that was unable to stand on her feet.
The outcome was simple and of course negative.
Actually, after only eleven years, Turkey will sign yet another friendship treaty with the Nazi regime, this time on the 18th of June 1941.
If that isn’t proof enough of a long term strategic success of the unacceptable.
